Random internet explorer ad popups?

I haven't used internet explorer in months yet for about the last hour I keep suddenly getting internet explorer popu ups with adverts for BT and googld chrome among other things, it makes my computer really slow when they come up too. I even deleted internet explorer and that hasn't helped. I'm not sure if it's connected, but on my google chrome I can no longer see anything below the adress bar (seems to have happened at about the same time).
